Brunch with the Girls

Yesterday, we had brunch with the girls and we invited a new friend who seemed to be as interested in the arts as us, except she wasn't. Usually, we're pretty good judges of character, but this time we were way off. We were all decked out in shoes from Barney's and brilliant diamonds and Tiffany's pearls, but she wore this awful, awful dress. We wish we had a picture so you could get the full look, but it looks like something an obese sixth grader would buy from Dillard's to wear to a public school dance. The fabric itself was red with black fishnet material directly on top, it had spaghetti straps (we didn't know they made those anymore, either), the top was a big padded rectangle, underneath which was a scrunched sash, the same material as the rest of the dress. It was mid-thigh length with a bubble hem, zipped up the back, and was worn with chunky, strappy black heels (?), and one of those tacky chain link "property of Tiffany's" necklaces. When we asked where she got it, she said "this boutique in Chicago." To which we asked, "Is that boutique called 'Dress Barn?'''.

That's mean :( here's the thing, I love your blog but I need to see what you're made of. Right now that brunch seems to me as if it had been attended by Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen... I understand you keep anonymacy so I don't ask for a face picture but can you show this third world girl who has never seen a diamond that American socialites exist?

Everyone has a different style... maybe to her and her circle of friends, she was very stylish. And she probably felt just as uncomfortable with you and you did with her.

I don't get Dress Barn's name - why would anyone want to affiliate themselves with a Barn - I hear "barn" I think of cows, manure, hay... and yes, good looking cowboys, but none of that makes me want to shop at Dress Barn!

Also, bubble hems... never a good look on anyone - even if you are super skinny, why make yourself look like you're emulating a jellyfish?

Ella, If you want to see everything that happens in the real american social life, you can watch the hills, High society, the Real Housewives, or NYC Prep, depending on your age.
Shayna, thank you for seeing eye to eye with us!!! You get us!!

Lol, so is that it? I thought tv only exaggerated things! Good to know

Ella, what's fabulous about the brunch girls is that they say what the rest of us are thinking... except about 10 times faster/more clever/better referenced to fashion icons

have to disagree regarding socialites. a lot of these tv shows are populated by those hungry for attention and/or who are indeed nouveau riche. which explains the poor taste exhibited on them.

socialites do not spend time much of their time saying tacky things to cameras, but in fact taking part in/attending/organizing philanthropic events.
case in point: tinsley certainly wasn't on television when she was married. and her background isn't exactly upstanding.

Nic - I agree with you. I attend many philanthropic events and the real socialites would never dare be on tv in a position like that. They will show up in newspapers and magazines at a benefit (see NYTimes style section for example) and that is it.

Wow controversy! I like it.

A.) I could picture this image so perfectly and literally could not stop laughing. Reminds me of sorority recruitment and our "assesments" of each girls fashion sense, dying laughing.
B.) I love some how finding myself submerged in a new blog and realizing 2 hours later, and 11 pages deep that I should probably just follow them. So thank you for your blogging brilliance and entertainment.
