Target: Zac Posen

This no longer surprises us, as a matter of fact, it's become more of a weekly occurrence. This comes from the girl who nearly cried when she learned that her grandmother had given away several Chanel suits and bags to Goodwill during her infancy (vintage now). Doing a line for Target is admitting a defeat much worse than bankruptcy. Ever since Rodarte, Thakoon, Anna Sui, Temperly London, Loomstate, Jean Paul Gautier, and now Zac Posen have sunk to that level, we've seen them tossed on the sale rack, often prematurely. Their fate is getting dropped by Barneys, Bendels, and Saks (Holy Trinity) and getting put in the final sale section of the Neiman Marcus website (worse than outlet). And we all know what happened to their fellow Target collaborator, Alexander McQueen, may he rest in peace. The fact is, designers shouldn't stoop to do lines IN Target, much less FOR Target.

I was in a Target and saw pretty much the entire Rodarte for Target line on clearance racks (70% off!).

Don't get me wrong, I love Target, but for things like toiletries and towels and workout clothes and their ridiculously awesome line of t-shirts...

I wouldn't have a problem with the collaborations if they were unique or kept ANY of the flavor of the designers' higher-end collections.... but dear god. Rodarte looked like the Forever21 outfit from hell, and Gaultier was just a snooze fest.

The closest Target to me is about 45 min away, so I don't really go there much. I think fashion designers making more affordable creations is a favorable idea, but not if the quality is poor.

I love the idea of designers making clothes most can afford, but they don't seem to do their best when they create the collections for Target or other chain stores like H&M.

I agree with what mostly everyone is saying here. I've strolled down those isles with all these collections and VERY LITTLE has caught my eye if any. I think they are going for that "affordable" line and throw all the other stuff out the window when it comes to quality of fabric and keeping some of the pieces just as contemporary and unique as their lines in Saks and Neiman's.

I think some of the accessories collections have translated better than any of the clothing collections ever did. I'm quite taken with the Cynthia Vincent wedges, and I own a pair of the studded, pointy-toe Sigerson Morrison colab from years past (I quite like them too!) I'd never try to pass them off as "designer," by any means, but if I'm going to buy a pair of $30 shoes, those are some serious bang for your buck, I think.

The Jean Paul Gaultier collection was especially horrendous. What the hell was with the plastic raincoat fabric they used for half of those dresses? My shower curtain looks more expensive.

So true --- I wouldn't mind if they lines for Target were as low-priced as Target clothing should be, rather than priced the same as the Gap but with inferior quality and strange details --- that's the other problem - the lines they create for Target are, for lack of a better word, ugly.

Ugly, overpriced, and of inferior quality materials... Why would anyone think that's a good plan??

AGREED
Well I'm English so we don't have target, but i've seen those low budget lines they do and they're really not very nice.

I can agree with the comments on quality, and will add that the reason these things do end up on the sale rack is very much about the pricing, as well as awareness. We have a Target GREATLAND (yes, the caps were necessary, lol) near here and not very many people are interested in designer clothing or the sort of "artsy" aesthetic of Rodarte and Gaultier's Rain Coat Dresses. I do wonder how long this trend will last, though.
